Careers

HYA is a great place to work and an outstanding place to grow in the profession — a place where young designers come to grow and mature architects come to stretch. We strive to be a supportive community; one that promotes a healthy work-life balance.

The studio environment is collaborative and inclusive. Our employees are involved from initial design through construction, maintaining team consistency from start to finish on nearly all projects. Everyone designs, develops drawings, collaborates with clients, consultants and contractors, and participates in construction observation. Our teams are organized around projects, not departments. The entire firm visits job sites together, typically once during construction and again at project completion.

Mentoring is important to us. Junior architects and senior management are intermingled in our open studio to foster and support vertical mentoring. Training and organized assistance to aid emerging architects includes ArchiCAD training, hosting ARE study seminars, and bi-weekly sketch and watercolor sessions. We encourage and support participation in extra-office activities such as ACE and STEAM student mentoring, local AIA chapter events, and participation on boards and committees.

We offer flex schedules, while expecting individuals and teams to honor deadlines and meet client expectations. The office meets for lunch every Thursday – a gathering time for us to present project updates, office news, share knowledge and learnings, and celebrate firm achievements. We celebrate birthdays, passing exams and acquiring building permits, often with champagne. Each employee contributes and is cared for in our HYA family.

Why Join HYA? Great people and great projects; Competitive salary and bonuses; Health, dental, vision and life insurance; Matched contributions to simple IRA retirement savings accounts; Paid time off and holiday benefits; Allowance for professional education and development and reimbursement for passed ARE tests; Bonus after completing exams for architect license; Annual membership to professional organizations such as AIA and NCARB; Pre-tax dollars for public transit costs, bicycle commute allowance, and in-house bicycle parking; Walking distance to Caltrain station; Cereal station and endless snacks (seriously!); Happy hours and flexible work schedules.
